Finally, the wrong environments will promote Doer to manage others. There is no safer way for Doer to appear off-the-charts busy than to be able to pack her calendar with completely useless management meetings, conference calls, interdepartmental meetings, and one-on-ones.
Training/Coaching/Monitoring
Like anyone else, Doer must be trained and coached, but please watch for Doer to use training and coaching as a bottomless bucket. Doer will take advantage of every new training available to her and will comfortably block out her calendar and mark herself unavailable for anything else during those times. Your real chance at getting something substantial from Doer is carefully monitoring her time allocation. Though they can be perceived as being childish, activity charts and regular phone check-ins with you can be very effective in maximizing Doerâs productivity.
STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING DOER
1. Schedule daily (or more frequent) activity updates so you know exactly how Doer is spending her time.
2. Make yourself or assign someone to the role of Doerâs taskmaster to make sure sheâs taking on productive tasks.
3. Donât let Doer shoo you away with her busy-ness. She tends to use it as a shield against confessing her lack of productivity.
4. Develop a point-driven activity model to force Doer to reveal how sheâs spending her time.
